From Burnout to Balance: Mastering Energy Management in Vet Med

Feb 24, 2025

Let’s be honest—being a vet can feel like riding a nonstop hamster wheel. Between packed schedules, intense cases, and client expectations, it’s easy for me to feel like my energy is being pulled in a million directions. And that’s just work. Add in trying to find time for family, exercise, friends, self-care, and maybe tackling that pile of laundry that’s starting to look like Mount Everest. Exhausting, right?

If you’re nodding along, here’s the hard truth: no amount of color-coded planners or productivity hacks can save me when my energy is tapped out. What I need isn’t better time management—it’s better energy management.

Unlike time, energy isn’t fixed. It’s renewable, dynamic, and tied directly to how well I’m taking care of my mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. The key is learning to manage my energy so I can show up for my life and my work without feeling like I’m running on empty. Let me break it down.

Why Energy Management > Time Management

I’ve heard the “work smarter, not harder” spiel plenty of times. But here’s the thing: I can have the smartest schedule on the planet, and it won’t matter if I’m too drained to stick to it. Even highly productive people can feel tapped out. Time management is all about doing more in less time. Energy management is about doing what actually matters most to me with the energy I have.

If I’m constantly feeling scattered, frustrated, anxious, depleted, or like I’m just surviving the day, it’s probably not a time issue. It’s an energy issue. By learning to protect and replenish my energy, I can avoid that dreaded crash-and-burn cycle and start thriving.

The Energy Tank: A Quick Metaphor

I like to think of my energy like a fuel tank. Every task, interaction, or decision I make has the potential to drain or fill that tank. If I’m not intentionally refilling it with things that light up my soul, I’ll eventually run on fumes—leading to stress, mistakes, and burnout.

For example, writing medical records for two hours may drain me. So I carve out time later that day to do something I love, like going for a hike or cuddling with my pet, to refill the tank.

The Four Energy Pillars

Managing my energy starts with understanding its four key quadrants. Each one plays a major role in how I show up in my life and career.

1. Mental Energy: Clear My Mind, Focus My Power

Mental energy is my brainpower—my ability to stay focused, think critically, and make decisions. Constant multitasking and information overload are like kryptonite for my mental energy.

How I replenish my mental energy:

  • I practice single-tasking. Tackling one thing at a time is a game-changer.

  • I take short, intentional breaks. Even stepping outside for two minutes refreshes my brain.

  • I use my phone’s “focus” mode to block non-essential notifications. (Those pings can wait.)

2. Physical Energy: Fuel My Foundation

My physical energy is my body’s battery, and it’s non-negotiable. Skipping meals and running on caffeine might get me through one shift, but it’s not a long-term strategy.

How I replenish my physical energy:

  • I hydrate (yes, this includes drinking water between cups of coffee).

  • I move my body—stretching between appointments or taking a short walk at lunch.

  • I treat myself after long stretches of work—maybe a bubble bath, a massage, or a guilt-free nap.

3. Emotional Energy: Protect My Peace

Vet med can be an emotional rollercoaster. Between comforting grieving clients and navigating workplace dynamics, my emotional energy takes a hit. If I don’t process it, those feelings weigh me down.

How I replenish my emotional energy:

  • I set boundaries for what I take on emotionally. Not every client’s stress has to become my stress.

  • I practice self-compassion and remind myself: “I’m doing the best I can.”

  • I look for small moments of joy—like cuddling a puppy or sharing a laugh with a coworker.

4. Spiritual Energy: Align With My “Why”

This isn’t about religion—it’s about purpose. Why do I do what I do? When my day-to-day feels disconnected from my values, my spiritual energy drains quickly.

How I replenish my spiritual energy:

  • I revisit my “why” and reflect on what brought me into vet med.

  • I spend time in nature or meditate—whatever helps me feel grounded.

  • I surround myself with people who inspire and uplift me. (Hint: that’s what The Evolved Vets is all about.)

3 Simple Ways I Recharge My Energy

1. I Schedule Rest Like a Non-Negotiable

Rest isn’t lazy—it’s necessary. Whether it’s a quiet walk, a yoga class, or zoning out with my favorite podcast, I intentionally carve out time to recharge.

2. I Find My “Energy Anchors”

What fills me up? Maybe it’s journaling, playing with my pet, or calling a friend. I identify those activities and build them into my routine.

3. Gratitude Is My Secret Weapon

I shift my focus from what’s draining me to what’s fueling me. Writing down three things I’m grateful for each day—even small things—helps reset my perspective. (Pro tip: coffee always counts.)

Making Energy Management a Habit

Energy management isn’t a one-time fix—it’s a lifestyle. The more I pay attention to my energy levels and take steps to replenish them, the more resilient I become.

I start small. I focus on one pillar at a time and watch how my clarity and energy improve.

Ready to Take Back Your Energy?

If I’m tired of feeling like I’m barely keeping my head above water, it’s a sign I need to try something new. Energy management is about aligning my mind, body, emotions, and spirit with the things that inspire me so I can show up as my best self—at work and at home.
